For a child under six this is the quality of experience that feeds the whole child. Nothing on a screen offers the child anything of equal value. The whole-child novelty, the thrill, the physical sensations–all of these feed the child’s mind, body, and spirit. When providing opportunities for adventure, nothing compares with the child’s full body engagement in the wonders of the natural world. And this particular example is so simple and elemental, so immediately available and affordable. All that is required of the parent is a little time, a little latitude, and a little indulgence!
