Montessori speaks of exploration of the environment, engagement in an activity, and repetition of the chosen challenge as the child’s way of learning. No one forces this baby elephant to practice and refine his chosen activity. He is motivated from within to respond to elements in the environment according to the sensitive periods of his plane of development. He takes joy in extreme effort. It is the same for the child whose human tendencies predispose him and whose sensitive periods drive him hard.
